Introducing ROM 2 Automation Operating Model

Our next iteration of the robotic operating model helps you deliver scaled deployment of robotic process automation (RPA) tailored to your organization’s needs, with all the guides, templates and maturity model to make your digital transformation a success. The SS&C | Blue Prism® Robotic Operating Model 2 (ROM™2) enables you to expand your intelligent automation (IA) capabilities by strategically designing your organization’s automation journey.

We’ll show you how to set up and scale your IA capabilities for mature automation programs so you can drive your organization’s efficiency at scale. The ROM2 offers a simplified step-by-step guide so you can start small and scale quickly.

Evolving the robotic operating model

Research by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) shows “70% of digital transformations fall short of their objectives, often with profound consequences.” But with a flexible model to help improve and scale your automations, that can change—starting with your organization.

The robotic operating model (ROM) started as an industry-leading approach of delivering scaled RPA deployment without getting bogged down in additional procedures or governance obligations. The ROM strategically deploys digital workers to automate tasks and simplify processes, so your organization’s workflow runs efficiently and with fewer errors.

Now at the pace IA is growing, the ROM has evolved into our next iteration: the ROM2. The ROM2 still does all the work of the ROM, but it simplifies the model’s foundations, making it easier to implement while also expanding its capabilities. The ROM2 provides the applicable level of content to help organizations as their IA program matures.

The ROM2 is designed to fully integrate with an organization’s existing change management methodology. It still adapts to the ever evolving need to scale automation with a unified workforce. Only now it’s designed with an improved delivery methodology focused on creating better value at speed. This new RPA operating model clarifies your path to growth, creating a customized approach to automation that’s appropriate to where your organization stands in its journey.

Step-by-step guide for achieving transformational automation

The five foundations of the ROM2

We’ve made it even easier to implement your automation capability using the ROM2 framework—first to successfully launch, then maintain and finally to scale your IA program. Our five updated ROM2 foundations will enable you to build and tailor your version of the ROM2 so you can expand your IA and create an innovative strategy for transforming the way your organization looks.

The ROM2’s five foundations are criteria you’ll build to ensure your organization has a robust automation capability:

  • Strategy – developing a strategy and governance framework in line with your organization’s key vision. Establish a clear goal based on your ideal vision of future work. A coherent strategy is essential for forming a functional hybrid workforce, but that’s not all. You’ll also need an IA or RPA business case to earn buy-in from the rest of the organization. Once that's done, you can move on to setting up governance, predicting the risks and controls of IA and determining the architecture and technology required to run it.
  • Workforce – transitioning into a unified workforce by seamlessly connecting employees and digital workers. If you’re going to unify your workforce, you’ll need to adopt new ways of thinking and working. An established organizational model will help you frame roles and responsibilities to keep your automation journey on track. Educate and upskill your workforce by setting up a reliable Center of Excellence (CoE) consisting of critical thinkers from across the organization willing to utilize IA. A CoE helps maintain policies and standards while onboarding and training digital workers.
  • Design – discovering opportunities for your organization’s digital transformation by researching, consulting and designing your RPA operating model. Your research identifies where there’s potential and helps you assess and prioritize automation. It’s important to weigh the cost of automation with the benefits it will serve from implementing it. In your design phase, think about what requirements your organization has before implementing RPA, and consider whether hybrid solutions are valuable to you. Hybrid solutions can include IA, human in the loop (HITL), digital exchange (DX) or third party.
  • Development – aligning your IA delivery methods for improved integration. Keep quality assurance top of mind by testing delivery controls, introducing and monitoring live data, staying up to date with security and access and continuously searching for ways to improve your current automated processes.
  • Operations – using best practices to reach a streamlined workflow and maintain control of business operations. Manage and optimize your workforce to ensure successful deployment of digital workers and continue monitoring them for recovery and continuity. As your operations are running, you’ll be able to tweak processes in response to emerging data.

The new maturity model and how it applies to you

Our new robotic operating model (ROM2) is your pathway to growth. With the ROM2 we’ve extended our maturity model to five levels, so you have a clearer scope of how to achieve IA expansion. Our model evolves to fit your organization where it’s at, with whatever automation tools you’re using. Essentially, the maturity model helps you identify your digital maturity and guides you through every step—from efficiency, to enrichment, to total reinvention.

It’s important to use the five levels of the maturity track to identify where your organization is so you can find a pace and style of automation that suits you and your team’s capabilities:

  1. Aware: finding small efficiency gains and streamlining ways of working by using internal tools and capabilities.
  2. Active: delivering continuous improvement for enhanced customer and employee experiences.
  3. Operational: embedding automation programs to continue achieving efficiency.
  4. Thriving: scaling automation to redesign and reengineer customer and employee journeys.
  5. Visionary: using automation to innovate and digitally transform your organization’s operations.

    Benefits of ROM2

The ROM2 is a tool-agnostic methodology offering flexible guidelines. It’s a framework useful with any automation tools, so you can build on your automation maturity. The ROM2 ensures your automation programs are always delivering beneficial results:

    • Reducing risk.
    • Building confidence when deploying intelligent automation.
    • Transforming your organization’s vision into action.
    • Increasing buy-in across the organization.
    • Improving alignment between IT and business operations.
    • Ensuring a rapid and repeatable approach to process delivery.
    • Giving better control and visibility across the organization.

Making the ROM2 work for you

The ROM2 ensures you’re not alone in your automation journey. And our maturity model can pinpoint your organization’s potential for growth by designing an automation methodology tailored to your level and need.
